Longji Terraces, sometimes called the Dragon's Backbone rice Terraces, Longji Rice Terraces is the amazing scenery in the world by Zhuang people. They were built over 300 years from the late 1200s to the early 1600s, during the Yuan and Qing Dynasty's, and are still actively maintained and farmed today. In the scenic area of Longji Rice Terrace live two ethnic groups, Zhuang and Yao. In Pingan Zhuang Ethnic Group, the featured culture like traditional ethnic costumes, the quaint Zhuang folk dance and melodious songs can be felt. There are several village in Jinkeng Hongyao Rice Terrace. One at the foot of mountain is Dazhai Yao Village where you can witness the local lifestyle and feel Yao ethnic culture.
The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, the highest part being 880 m in elevation while the lowest part is 380 m. The coiling line that starts from the mountain foot up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water glittering in the sun in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of golden rice in fall, and layers of silvery frost in winter. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the island was called 'Yuanshazhou Island'. It got its present name from the huge reef surrounding it. When the tide comes in, the waves pound the reef and it sounds like the beating of a drum. The island came to be named 'Gulang'. Gu in Chinese means 'drum', and Lang, 'waves'.
 It is quite small and is across from the ferry terminal on Xiamen Island near Xiamen University. There is a piano museum you can visit. The whole island is full of natural scenic spots and its main scenic spots include the Crag of Sunlight, Garden of Beans (Shuzhuang Huayuan) and Bright Moon Garden (Haoyueyuan).

Today, although less in number, tourists continue to visit Shaoshan. The memory of Mao continues to live on, with stores selling everything from Mao badges to Mao karaoke videos, and restaurants serving Mao's favorite dishes.
